About Alps Electrical and our Journey...South.
Starting as a 16-year-old apprentice. Alps Electrical was born in 1998.
In 1992, at 16, Andy embarked on his professional journey as an electrical apprentice. A reputable, large-scale commercial and industrial company employed him. Over six transformative years, Andy gained extensive experience working in diverse environments such as power stations, factories, and various commercial projects.
Upon his departure in 1998, Andy felt equipped and confident enough to establish his company, Alps Electrical. He would oversee domestic and commercial projects, showcasing his refined skills and expertise from years of training.
Yet, this professional endeavour did not detract Andy from his personal passion - singing and performing as a musician. Despite his demanding career, he juggled his duties with his fervour for music, managing both with remarkable determination.
In 2005, a significant shift occurred in Andy's life, blending his professional and personal worlds in a way he could not have foreseen. He auditioned for the popular talent show The X Factor UK, a platform renowned for unveiling hidden musical talents nationwide. This journey southward, both in a geographical and metaphorical sense, marked the next chapter in Andy's journey.
X Factor UK Finalist.
Andy made it to The X Factor UK Series 2 Final, finishing in 3rd position with his brother Carl as the duo Journey South. They made it to the final as part of the Groups category mentored by Simon Cowell.
Following his successful stint on The X Factor, he landed a coveted record deal with Simon Cowell. His first album was met with remarkable success, becoming the fastest-selling album in 2006 and securing the number-one spot on the charts. This musical debut sold over 216,000 copies within its first week alone.
Such success was not short-lived; Andy continued to ride this wave of popularity and released a second successful album. His music even broke international barriers, securing a number-one spot in South Africa's charts. He has toured the UK and the world, performing before thousands of fans in diverse, stunning locations and having incredible experiences.
During their time on the show, Journey South performed various songs showcasing their soulful harmonies and vocal talents. Some of their most memorable performances included "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Roberta Flack, "Desperado" by The Eagles, and "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" by U2.
Meeting Prince Charles and a UK Chart-Topping Album.
A highlight of his musical career that deserves a special mention was the honour of performing for Prince Charles on his 60th birthday at the Prince of Wales Theatre. Andy and his bandmate, Carl, took to the stage and serenaded the royal audience with a rendition of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." The now King Charles and Queen Camilla were situated stage-side, seated on chairs, absorbed in the performance. Andy recalls fondly that after their performance, the Prince complimented them, humorously noting that their performance was "Beautifully executed and not too loud".
After an eventful 15-year-long career as a professional musician, Andy found himself drawn back to his roots. He decided to revive and focus on his electrical business, Alps Electrical. The company has since flourished, boasting over 250 excellent reviews and continuing to go from strength to strength.
Alps Electrical's continued growth and move into solar.
As part of their continuous growth and adaptation to changing times, ALPS Electrical is now venturing into solar energy, concentrating on domestic and commercial projects. This new endeavour symbolises Andy's commitment to staying at the forefront of the industry while also championing sustainable energy solutions.
Equally exciting is the company's plans for workforce expansion and the increased investment in their apprentice programme. Recognising the importance of nurturing fresh talent, Alps Electrical is eager to offer opportunities to young individuals embarking on their career journeys. Aspiring electricians will have the chance to learn from seasoned professionals, much like Andy did when he began his career all those years ago.
Andy's journey from an apprentice to an accomplished musician and business owner is coming full circle. He is eager to pay it forward, investing in the future generation of electricians keen to make their mark in the industry.
