EV Charger Grants in 2026: What's Still Available

The UK government has maintained EV charger grant funding into 2026 across three main schemes. Understanding which grants you qualify for — and ensuring you use an OZEV-authorised installer who can apply on your behalf — can reduce your installation cost by £350 to £14,000 depending on the type of installation. This guide covers every current scheme, eligibility criteria, and how to access the funding.

The EV Homecharge Scheme (OZEV): £350 for Home Chargers

The OZEV EV Homecharge Scheme provides a grant of £350 towards the cost of installing a home EV charger. The grant is available to homeowners and tenants with dedicated off-street parking (a driveway or private parking space). Key eligibility points:

  • You must own or have a vehicle on a finance agreement in your name, or live with someone who does
  • The vehicle must be a battery electric or plug-in hybrid with a battery of 2kWh or above
  • The property must have dedicated off-street parking
  • You must use an OZEV-authorised installer — the grant is applied directly by the installer and deducted from your invoice
  • Only one grant per household address

The practical effect: if an installed charger costs £900, you pay £550 after the grant. ALPS Electrical is OZEV-authorised, meaning we process the grant on your behalf with no additional bureaucracy for you. Our EV charger installation service covers the full grant process.

The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS): Up to £14,000

The Workplace Charging Scheme provides grants for businesses, charities and public sector organisations to install EV charger sockets. The scheme contributes 75% of the cost of purchase and installation up to a maximum of £350 per socket, across up to 40 sockets per applicant location. Maximum grant: £14,000 (40 sockets × £350). Eligibility criteria:

  • UK-registered business, charity or public sector body
  • Must be installing chargers at the organisation's premises (not for public use)
  • An OZEV-authorised installer must carry out the work
  • Applications are submitted through the OZEV portal before work commences

The WCS is particularly valuable for businesses with vehicle fleets or large numbers of employees who drive EVs. A 10-charger installation costing £12,000 may qualify for up to £3,500 in WCS grants, reducing the net cost to £8,500.

Local Authority and Regional Grants

Beyond national OZEV schemes, several local authorities and Combined Authorities run supplementary EV charger grant programmes. The Tees Valley Combined Authority has historically supported EV infrastructure investment. Check your local council website and OZEV's full list of local grant schemes for any additional funding available in your area. ALPS Electrical can advise on current local funding available in Teesside and the wider North East during your free installation consultation.

OZEV-Approved Charger Brands

To qualify for OZEV grants, the charger must be from the approved list. All major brands qualify, including Zappi, Ohme, Tesla Wall Connector, Easee, Wallbox, Andersen, Pod Point, Indra and others. The grant is not dependent on brand — it's applied based on the installation. Our Ohme Home Pro installation service is among the most popular OZEV grant applications we process.

Smart Charger Requirement

From July 2022, all home EV chargers must be "smart" chargers — capable of communicating with the grid and being controlled remotely to reduce demand during peak periods. All chargers we install meet this requirement. Smart charger functionality also enables Octopus Intelligent Go integration, which can reduce your overnight charging rate to below 2p/kWh on specially optimised slots — saving £300–£600 per year compared to unmanaged daytime charging.

How to Apply for the Grant

You don't apply yourself — your OZEV-authorised installer applies on your behalf. The process: contact us for a quote, confirm the installation details, we submit the OZEV application, receive confirmation, then carry out the installation. You pay the net price (after grant deduction) — the grant money goes directly to us as the installer. It's seamless from your perspective. Contact ALPS Electrical for a free EV charger installation quote — we handle all OZEV grant applications across Teesside and North Yorkshire.

Frequently Asked Questions

A typical home EV charger installation costs between £800 and £1,200 depending on the charger model and cable run distance. This includes the charger unit, all cabling, installation and commissioning. The OZEV grant covers up to £350, bringing the net cost down to £450-£850. Longer cable runs or consumer unit upgrades (if required) may add to the cost.

The OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) grant provides up to £350 towards the cost of installing a home EV charger. To qualify, you need an eligible electric vehicle, off-street parking, and the charger must be installed by an OZEV-approved installer like ALPS Electrical. We handle the entire grant application process — you simply pay the reduced price.

The best EV charger depends on your priorities. The MyEnergi Zappi is ideal if you have solar panels as it can divert excess solar energy to your car. The Ohme Home Pro offers the best smart tariff integration for cheap overnight charging. The Tesla Wall Connector is the premium choice for Tesla owners. The Wallbox Pulsar Max offers excellent build quality and smart features. We can advise on the best charger for your specific setup.

Yes, and this is one of the most satisfying aspects of having both solar and an EV. A MyEnergi Zappi charger can automatically divert excess solar energy to your car, giving you genuinely free motoring. On a sunny day, a 4kW solar system can add 15-20 miles of range per hour of charging. Combined with battery storage, you can store daytime solar energy and charge your car overnight from the battery.

A tethered charger has the cable permanently attached (like a petrol pump), so you simply grab the cable and plug in. An untethered (socketed) charger requires you to use your own cable. Tethered is more convenient for home use. Most chargers are available in both options. The Zappi, Ohme Home Pro and Wallbox Pulsar Max are all available tethered.
