Sigenergy: The Most Ambitious Home Energy System on the UK Market

Sigenergy arrived in the UK market in late 2023 with a bold claim: one system to manage all of your home's energy flows — solar generation, battery storage, EV charging, and heat pump control — through a single intelligent platform. At ALPS Electrical, we were among the early UK installers to bring Sigenergy online, and our Sigenergy solar and battery installation is featured on our YouTube channel.

This review reflects genuine installer experience across multiple Sigenergy installations, not a manufacturer briefing.

What Makes Sigenergy Different

Most energy storage products are single-function: a battery, or an inverter, or an EV charger. Sigenergy's architecture treats the home as an integrated energy system. The Sigenergy Hub (the central brain) communicates with the solar inverter module, battery pack, smart EV charger, and heat pump controller — optimising energy flows across all of them simultaneously.

The practical effect: on a sunny day, Sigenergy is simultaneously charging the battery from solar, charging your EV at a controlled rate from surplus, pre-heating your hot water cylinder, and managing grid import/export to optimise your tariff position. No other system does this as seamlessly in a single integrated product.

Technical Specifications

  • Battery capacity: 10kWh, 15kWh or 20kWh (scalable modules)
  • Inverter output: 5kW, 8kW or 12kW hybrid
  • EV charger: Integrated 7.4kW AC charger (Sigenergy SigenStor EV)
  • Whole-home backup: Yes, full UPS capability
  • V2H capability: Yes, with compatible electric vehicles
  • Warranty: 10 years battery and inverter

V2H: Vehicle to Home

V2H (Vehicle to Home) allows a compatible EV to discharge its battery into your home during peak electricity periods. With V2H, an EV with a 70+ kWh battery essentially acts as a giant home battery — charged cheaply overnight, discharged during expensive peak hours. Sigenergy is one of the few mainstream UK systems offering V2H capability out of the box, and as compatible EVs (Nissan Leaf, selected Hyundai/Kia models, some Chinese imports) become more common, this feature becomes increasingly valuable.

Installation Experience

Sigenergy installations are more complex than single-product competitors due to the integrated multi-system approach. Allow a full day for a complete solar + battery + EV charger installation. Commissioning requires Sigenergy's software tools and careful parameter configuration — we completed our engineers' Sigenergy training and recommend using certified installers only. The result, when properly set up, is impressive: seamless energy management that genuinely requires minimal user intervention.

Cost and Value

A Sigenergy system with 10kWh battery and 5kW inverter costs approximately £10,000–£13,000 fully installed for a solar + battery + EV setup. This is premium pricing. However, when you compare with buying a solar inverter, battery, and EV charger from separate manufacturers, the price gap narrows, and the integration benefits are genuine.

Who Is Sigenergy For?

Sigenergy is the right choice for technology-forward homeowners who want the most capable integrated home energy system available, are comfortable with premium pricing, own or plan to own an EV, and want whole-home backup capability. For budget-focused homeowners or those wanting a simpler setup, GivEnergy or FOX ESS offer better value. For premium buyers who prioritise brand and app experience without the complexity, Tesla Powerwall 3 remains the alternative. Contact ALPS Electrical for a Sigenergy quote in the North East.

Frequently Asked Questions

Battery storage costs in the UK range from £2,500 for a small 5kWh unit to £12,000+ for premium systems like the Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5kWh). A mid-range system like the GivEnergy Gen 3 with 9.5kWh storage typically costs £4,000-£6,000. Prices include installation and are subject to 0% VAT when installed alongside or added to an existing solar panel system.

Yes, battery-only installations are increasingly popular. By charging your battery overnight on cheap tariffs like Octopus Go (7.5p/kWh) and using that stored energy during the day when rates are 24p+/kWh, you can save hundreds of pounds per year. Our Fox Cube battery-only installation video on YouTube demonstrates the savings potential in detail.

Both are excellent systems. The Tesla Powerwall 3 has a built-in inverter (simplifying installation), 13.5kWh capacity, backup gateway capability and the polished Tesla app. GivEnergy Gen 3 offers more flexible sizing, a strong community following, open API access and typically lower cost per kWh of storage. We install both and recommend based on your specific needs, budget and whether you want full home backup capability.

Modern lithium-ion solar batteries typically last 10-15 years, or 6,000-10,000 charge cycles. Tesla Powerwall comes with a 10-year warranty. GivEnergy offers a 12-year warranty on Gen 3 batteries. After warranty expiry, batteries continue to work but with gradually reduced capacity, similar to a mobile phone battery. Most batteries retain 70-80% of original capacity after 10 years.

A hybrid (DC-coupled) battery connects directly to the solar panels via a hybrid inverter, converting energy once and achieving higher efficiency (typically 95-97%). An AC-coupled battery connects to your home electrical circuit and works independently of the solar inverter, making it easier to retrofit to existing solar installations. We install both types and recommend based on whether this is a new installation or an addition to an existing system.
